How to password protect a PDF

  1. Open a PDF

  2. Set a password

    Enter and confirm a password.

  3. Save encrypted copy

Create the protected copy and store the password safely.

Before you save

  • Oxford PDF does not store or recover your password. If you lose it, you may lose access to the encrypted copy.
  • Encryption is not a digital signature. Unsupported or already protected files can be refused.

Questions about password protection

Will the password be sent to a server?

No. Encryption runs locally in the browser, and the tool does not upload the PDF or password.

Will my original file also become locked?

No. The tool creates a new encrypted copy. Your original remains unchanged.
