What Happens to Your File

OxnaPDF parses the PDF content streams, Form XObjects and annotation appearances of your selected pages in browser memory, rewriting RGB and CMYK colour operators (rg, RG, k, K, cs, CS, sc, scn, SC, SCN) to DeviceGray luminance values.

It also converts embedded colour raster images on those pages into 8-bit DeviceGray bitmaps while keeping vector text and paths as crisp selectable vector objects, then saves a new PDF copy on your device.

Limits

  • Accepts unencrypted PDFs up to 100 MB and 500 pages, converting all pages or a selected page range.
  • Converts page content streams, nested Form XObjects, annotation appearances and standard embedded raster images to DeviceGray; stencil image masks are preserved intact.
  • If a page uses unusual shading patterns or embedded ICC colour streams that cannot be rewritten at the operator level, the local engine falls back to a verified greyscale page render for that page.

Good to Know

  • Because vector text and line art are rewritten at the PDF colour-operator level rather than rasterised, your text stays 100% selectable and searchable.
  • You can enter a page range (such as 2-20) to keep a colour front cover while converting the interior pages to black and white for printing.

Questions

Does Grayscale PDF Keep Text Selectable?
Yes, vector text remains selectable while page colours, vector graphics and images convert to grayscale.
Can I Convert Only a Selected Page Range?
Yes, convert all pages in the document or enter a specific page range to turn grayscale.
Is My PDF Uploaded for Grayscale Conversion?
No, colour conversion runs locally in your browser on OxnaPDF's own engine.
Are Both Vector Shapes and Embedded Photos Converted to Greyscale?
Yes, the engine rewrites vector colour operators to DeviceGray luminance and converts embedded colour images to 8-bit greyscale.
Does Converting to Greyscale Change My Original Colour PDF?
No, your original colour file stays untouched on your device and a separate greyscale PDF copy is downloaded.
